Here's some cool background information and history about Nanjing, my host city! Nanjing is in the eastern part of China right on the Yangtze River ( 长江) in Jiangsu province. Nanjing was originally called Nanking until the pinyin was reformed, similar to why Beijing used to be Peiking. Nanjing means "Southern Capital" and was the capital of China for six dynasties starting in 3 B.C.E., thus it is one of the "Four Great Ancient Capitals". Nanjing first became the capital when San Quan of the Wu Kingdom relocated his capital during the Three Kingdoms Period. Nanjing also was named the capital after the Xinhai Revolution when the Republic of China was founded in January of 1912 by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen the capital was quickly relocated to Beijing when Yuan Shikai, a Qing revolutionary, took over. However when the KMT took over with Chiang Kai-shek at it's helm, the capital was again relocated to Nanjing in 1927. Today, Nanjing is the provincial capital of Jiansu province. Nanjing currently has a total population of 8.16 million people, with most of the people living in the urban-city area (approx. 6.55 million). Nanjing is the second largest commercial center in "East China", right after Shanghai. Nanjing has a rich culture, filled with places where poets from the Tang and Song dynasties gathered to write. During the Ming dynasty, Nanjing was the imperial examination center. I can't wait to go to this amazing and beautiful city this summer! Below are some pictures of Nanjing.
